Am I still saved?

By Minister Sonnie Robinson (Jan, 2025)

Have you ever wondered, “Do I still have the Holy Spirit?” or, to put it plainly, “Am I still saved?” I believe many believers have wrestled with this at some point, and some have found peace and reassurance, while others have continued to struggle with doubt. This is a topic that countless biblical scholars and Christian writers have explored in depth, so much of what I have to say may sound familiar. However, I believe God has given me a perspective on this issue, that will bless those who are battling with these lingering doubts about their salvation.

Clearly, this is no small matter! Being out of touch with the Holy Spirit can have serious consequences for our spiritual lives! That’s why I truly believe that when people don’t fully understand God’s plan for redemption and salvation, they are more vulnerable to doubts. It’s critical to know what His plan is, and how we can participate in it because without that foundation, many believers will continue to ask, “Am I still saved?”

And that’s where the Holy Spirit comes in! The Holy Spirit is the one who teaches us how to live holy lives so that we can be effective witnesses for the Gospel of Jesus Christ. To be blessed and productive believers, we need the power of the Holy Spirit. Without it, we are simply “wannabe Christians” and we lack the strength to resist sin and the attacks Satan will bring to separate us from God.

Before we can really get to the heart of our personal doubts about our salvation status, I think we need to figure out how we got saved in the first place.

So, how do you know if the Holy Spirit is active in your life?

The short answer is: when you can recognize and resist sin. Sin is the real issue and the roadblock that separates us from God. Without the Holy Spirit, we have no power to resist sin! The Holy Spirit is a gift of grace – it’s not something we earn through our personal goodness or spiritual activities. This is why we need to pray continually for the Holy Spirit to work in our lives and to keep us from sin, help us resist temptation, lead us to repentance, strengthen our faith, deepen our understanding of Scripture, and help us become more like Christ.

So, if I doubt my salvation, am I still saved?

God doesn’t want us to live in uncertainty about our salvation. As 1 John 5:13 tells us, “I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.” When we place our trust in Jesus and intentionally follow the Holy Spirit, He bears witness to our spirit, confirming that we are indeed, God’s children.

So, is it possible to be sure of your salvation? Absolutely!

So, here’s the thing! Some people may struggle with doubt because they knew of people they trusted who seemed saved but later left the faith, or they may have doubt because they don’t always feel confident in their salvation. Believers may also question their salvation when we recognize that their lives don’t always reflect Christ’s presence within them.

Now, here’s the truth! The assurance of salvation is not based on anything we do. It rests completely on what Christ has done for us and our sincere belief in the promises of Scripture. It’s not our good works or perfect faith that saves us – it’s God’s grace, through our belief in Jesus.

If you sincerely believe in God’s promises and confess Jesus as your Lord and Savior, you can be sure that you are reconciled to God. However, our lives must reflect what we profess to believe. While salvation is not earned by good works, we should consistently stay away from temptation to sin and pursue what is pleasing to God, as a sign of our genuine faith.

I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God that you may know that you have eternal life… We know that we are from God… and we know that the Son of God has come and has given us understanding, so that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ.” 1 John 5:19-20

Let Us Pray

I come to you Lord, seeking assurance of my salvation. Sometimes I feel uncertain, but I trust in Your promises and the saving power of Jesus’ sacrifice. Please give me peace and confidence through the Holy Spirit. Remind me of Your love and help me to rest in the salvation You’ve given me. Strengthen my faith so I can walk closely with You every day. I pray this in Jesus’ name. Amen.
